Here's to a Cracking Season
With a strong start and a fair wind, it’s all looking promising.
As we reach the halfway point in the year, I just wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported World of Chillies this season. Your orders, messages and ongoing enthusiasm keep the whole thing alive—without you, I wouldn’t be able to grow such a wild and wonderful mix of chilli varieties. So truly, thank you.
My greenhouse is groaning a bit at the seams right now. I’ve packed it full, trialling all sorts of new chillies this year. One I’m particularly curious about is something called Farmer’s Market Jalapeño.
It’s not your standard smooth-skinned pod—it’s big, scarred and rugged, with hairy leaves that remind me far more of a serrano. Possibly a bit of cross-pollination going on there… we’ll have to wait and see what it turns into.
The Chinese Facing Heaven is also looking stunning—elegant and upright, a real looker of a plant. And I’ve got a Hungarian Black that’s just beginning to flower, with vivid purple blooms that are almost too pretty to belong to something edible.

Then there’s Raging Bull, which some of you might remember was our very first Chilli of the Week this year. I’m a big fan of biquinho, but this hybrid has won me over—similar shape but bigger pods, and it’s absolutely laden with them. I can’t wait to see how it tastes once it ripens up properly.
Tomatoes are charging ahead too. The greenhouse vines are already up near the roof, and to be honest I’m trying to keep as much space as I can for chillies, so I’ve focused more on robust outdoor varieties this time round. Many are already fruiting, and I’ve been especially impressed by the new Tremolo—a proper sturdy little robot of a tomato, doing everything right so far.
After months of growing thousands of chillies for others—carefully raised to just a few inches tall—it’s time for me to finally grow some big ones of my own. Come September, I’ll be back with stories, photos and maybe a few surprises. Until then—good luck, and may your plants be as fiery as your enthusiasm.

The Met Office is hinting at the possibility of a hot summer, and after the super-dry spring we’ve just had, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s tough on nature, but for chilli growers, it’s looking like a stellar year. We’ve only just entered June and some of my plants are already fruiting heavily.
Once again, it proves how much of a head start early plugs can give you—especially when started as far back as February. If you’ve been nurturing yours since then, you’ll know what I mean. By starting early—not only do you save money by buying plugs, but the plants are already well established and ready to seize any stretch of good weather that comes their way.
If I’m honest, I’ve left a few of mine in their 1-litre pots far too long, so this weekend I’m knuckling down and getting them potted on. They’re absolutely raring to go.
And if you’ve still got a gap or a sunny corner going spare, there are just a handful of plug plants left in the shop—going for £1.50 each while they last. Bargains for the latecomers.

So here’s to the season ahead—feed your chillies, don’t overcrowd them, and go easy on the watering if things cool down again. I really do think we’re heading for one of the best chilli seasons we’ve seen in a while.
