Dark by Design

Indigo Rose is best known for its unusually dark skin, which develops a deep purple to near-black colour when the fruit is exposed to strong light.

This colouring comes from anthocyanins in the skin — pigments more commonly associated with berries — and gives the tomatoes their distinctive appearance on the vine.

The fruits are at the larger end of the cherry scale, ripening from green to red and then darkening as the shoulders colour in. For best flavour, they should be left to fully ripen before picking; sweetness increases noticeably at this stage, and the acidity softens.

This is an indeterminate cherry tomato that grows steadily and crops over a long season under good conditions. The plants set fruit reliably and benefit from consistent warmth and light, which helps both flavour and colour development.

Indigo Rose performs best under glass, where conditions are stable and ripening is more predictable. It can be grown outdoors in a warm, sheltered position, but in cooler or mixed summers the fruit may colour before it fully sweetens, making patience important.

This is a tomato grown for visual character and curiosity as much as flavour, and it rewards growers who are willing to let it ripen properly.
