Growing tomatoes outdoors in the UK can feel uncertain, but some varieties are genuinely better suited to it than others. The Outdoor Tomato Plug Collection brings together three cherry tomatoes that have been selected specifically for their ability to cope with British summers, cropping early and reliably without the need for protection.

All three are bush (determinate) varieties. That means no staking, no side-shoot removal, and no elaborate setup. They’re ideal for pots, patios, growbags and hanging baskets, especially where space is limited or a greenhouse isn’t an option.

Cherry tomatoes also have practical advantages outdoors. The smaller fruits ripen faster, are less prone to splitting, and are more forgiving when the weather turns unsettled. In stop-start summers, that reliability makes a real difference.

Included in the collection are two plugs each of Tumbling Tom, Cherry Falls F1 and Red Alert F1.

• Tumbling Tom is a long-established patio favourite. It produces small, sweet cherry tomatoes on gently trailing stems, making it well suited to hanging baskets and raised containers. It crops steadily through the season and is one of the easiest tomatoes to grow outdoors.

• Cherry Falls F1 is compact and tidy, with a naturally cascading habit. The plants produce long trails of bright red cherry tomatoes with good sweetness, and they look particularly good spilling over the edge of pots and baskets. It’s a reliable choice where space is tight but yields still matter.

• Red Alert F1 is one of the earliest outdoor tomatoes to mature. The plants are compact and productive, producing slightly larger cherry tomatoes with a tangy-sweet flavour. Its speed makes it especially useful in cooler areas or summers where time is limited.

Together, these three varieties offer a low-maintenance, flavour-led way to grow tomatoes outdoors, even without a greenhouse.
