Royal Black is one of the most striking ornamental–culinary chillies you can grow from seed.

The foliage emerges a deep purple-black — almost lacquered — and stays dark throughout the season, giving the plant a dramatic, architectural presence. Against this, the pods stand out beautifully: first a vivid purple, then ripening through red as they mature.

Despite its gothic appearance, the plant is a true Capsicum annuum, compact and naturally bushy, making it ideal for containers, patios, and sunny borders.

From seed it establishes quickly, forming tidy upright stems that branch into dense clusters of dark leaves and pendant pods.

Heat levels are on the milder side of medium — enough to be useful in the kitchen without overwhelming a dish.

The flavour is clean and lightly fruity, with the younger purple pods giving a slightly sharper bite than the fully ripened red fruit.
