A sweet, aromatic tomato for under glass.
Shimmer F1 was a new variety for me, and one that proved its worth very quickly. Added late to the greenhouse, it still cropped strongly and consistently, which immediately marked it out as something worth paying attention to.
This is an indeterminate tomato producing almond-shaped fruits that ripen to a deep purply red, overlaid with fine bronze-gold striping. The colouring develops gradually, and the fruits hang in neat clusters that are easy to harvest. When sliced lengthways, the shape gives a pleasing, heart-like profile, but it’s the eating quality that really sets it apart.
The flavour combines sweetness with depth. There’s a rich, aromatic quality alongside enough acidity to keep it balanced, rather than simply sugary. The flesh is firm and juicy, holding together well when cut, which makes it useful beyond snacking — it works just as well plated or mixed with more savoury varieties.
Shimmer F1 performs best under glass, where warmth and consistency allow both flavour and colour to develop fully. Even with a late start, it proved productive and reliable, which is why it’s earned a place in my greenhouse again.
This is a variety chosen for flavour first, with appearance following close behind.
