Chilli of the Week - Cheiro Roxa
This week, I'm excited to introduce you to a chilli variety that's as vibrant and mesmerising as the colourful streets of Brazil (I know it’s Brazil again)—but THIS IS THE CHEIRO ROXA CHILLI! Get ready to spice up your culinary repertoire with this Brazilian gem.
Imagine taking a bite into a small, vibrant purple gem bursting with flavour. This little chilli fits right into that sweet spot in terms of heat…not too fiery, just perfect for those who enjoy a bit of a kick without setting their taste buds ablaze.
What sets the Cheiro Roxa apart is its fruity flavour profile. It's like a juicy explosion of plums and apricots dancing on your palate, bringing a delightful sweetness that balances out the heat beautifully.
What sets the Cheiro Roxa apart is its fruity flavour profile. It's like a juicy explosion of plums and apricots dancing on your palate, bringing a delightful sweetness that balances out the heat beautifully. Though they can get quite hot, the British climate will keep the heat level down… unless of course, we get a scorcher of a summer.
The Cheiro Roxa chilli plant typically grows to around a metre. It has a bushy growth habit with dark foliage that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant purple peppers it produces.
An adaptable plant, it can thrive both in pots and in the ground and is relatively easy to grow, making it suitable for beginners and experienced growers alike, as it doesn't require much fuss or special attention.
The peppers of the Cheiro Roxa plant start off green and ripen to a that signature salmon/violet colour.
The term "Cheiro Roxa" is a delightful fusion of Portuguese and indigenous Brazilian languages. In Portuguese, "Cheiro" can be loosely translated to "scent" or "aroma," while "Roxa" translates to "purple," perfectly capturing the chilli's distinctive hue.
So, when you combine the two, you get a name that evokes images of the aromatic essence of purple—a fitting homage to the spirit of Brazil.
I'm really looking forward to growing this great looking chilli and tasting those plummy and apricot notes.
World of Chillies was set up by Sarah Hunt in 2011 to promote chilli growing and the enjoyment of everything hot and spicy.
