Chilli of the Week - Chocolate Habanero
Every week during the growing season, I like to highlight a special chilli. It's my way of introducing new varieties and bringing back some love for the old favourites.
The Chocolate Habanero, originating from the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, stands out as a unique chilli cultivar celebrated for its rich brown-black fruits with a subtle chocolate undertone. Thriving in the tropical climate of its place of origin, this chilli has become a culinary gem with a distinctive flavour profile.
Hailing from the Yucatan Peninsula, the Chocolate Habanero chilli is well-suited to the tropical climate of the region. Its vibrant green leaves and petite white flowers give it a distinctive appearance. Resilient in various climates, the plant flourishes under sunny conditions, showcasing adaptability to diverse environments.
The Chocolate Habanero offers more than just heat. Its nuanced taste combines bold spiciness with a faint chocolate essence. Within Yucatan cuisine, it plays a starring role in dishes like the renowned "mole," contributing both depth and heat.
Local specialties like Mole Poblano and Chocolatada highlight the versatility of this chilli, adding a unique and spicy twist to traditional Mexican fare.
Its rich, smoky flavour expands beyond merely providing heat, making it a sought-after ingredient in exotic cuisines worldwide.
With a Scoville rating ranging from 300,000 to 577,000 SHU, the Chocolate Habanero chilli packs a punch. Its intense spiciness appeals to those who enjoy the challenge of fiery peppers. Growing the Chocolate Habanero comes with unique experiences.
Compared to the classic Orange Habanero, it starts slower at the beginning of the season and proves to be a bit finicky, requiring attention to watering, sunlight, and ventilation. While not as productive as its orange cousin, the plant compensates with gorgeous pods.
The transformation from lime green to rich chocolatey brown pods is a visually stunning journey, adding to the allure. The hot, smoky pods bring a rich fruity, smoky flavour to food, creating a rewarding and flavourful culinary experience that will transform your chilli con carne forever.
If you fancy your hand at growing the Chocolate Habanero you can buy plug plants or seeds from the shop.. We also grow Orange Habanero Plugs and stock seeds too if you fancy growing from scratch.
